About ‘The Roaming Writer’

The Roaming Writer Painting By The Eden River

I’m a working class writer who, by passion, writes short stories – and by trade, is a freelance digital marketer helping independent businesses grow. I have a BA in Creative Writing from Liverpool John Moores University and MA in Writing from Manchester Metropolitan University (and a whole lot of debt to go with them).
I was born in Sussex, but when I was six I moved to Liverpool with my Mum and sister. I grew up in Anfield and lived there most of my life, only leaving for a brief stint at Coventry uni, but ended up coming back after three months and going to uni in Liverpool instead.

During my studies, I worked as a chef to pay bills and wrote for online publications voluntarily. My first published article was in 2015. During my BA, I had a short story published in the university literary magazine In The Red. This was my first time seeing my writing in print amongst some other incredible poetry and short fiction. During my MA, I also had three poems published in a local Poetry Anthology, Give Poetry A Chance.
After graduating from my BA, I started looking for writing jobs, but found myself in a catch 22 of having a 2:1 degree – but no experience. Instead, I took it upon myself to create more experience by freelance writing for agencies and publications. Once I’d built a small portfolio, I then began writing at marketing firms, still freelancing on the side. But when I tell you – corporate agencies are the worst place to go if you’re a creative person. It took three marketing firms for me to realise that sitting at a desk 9-5 is not for me.

I took the plunge and went full-time freelance in December 2023. I’d half-converted my van at the time and was planning to go to Portugal for the holiday break, but instead ended up travelling for the full 90 days (thanks Brexit). With Ruby in tow, I built more of the van in France, before travelling through Spain, Gibraltar, Portugal, and looping around Spain’s north coast, and back through France. It was probably one of the most eye opening experiences I’ve had. And it came perfectly timed for my Saturn Return because… I never really returned home! I’ve been travelling in my little Ford Transit ever since. It may not be built to live in, but it suits our needs for now. Which brings us to… the Roaming Retreats.

This year, I’ve started to put my passions into practice and hosted two Creative Retreats, where guests can connect in nature and create together. I am so passionate about it, each retreat has been emotional. To see them come to life, to meet new people, and to see people arriving alone but leaving with friends is magic. I want to thank everyone who has joined us in the woods so far, without you, we couldn’t have made my dreams come true.
Next year, we’re looking to book more retreats in multiple locations, North Wales, Cumbria and the Scottish Highlands. We’re hoping to connect to local land owners who share our passion and ethos, who want to help people connect to nature. We’re looking for creatives, ecologists and environmentalists, anyone who can create inspiring workshops based on nature. If this is you, give us a shout! We’ve got lots lined up for 2026.

Big love,
Chelsea.
